George H. Morris: Y-Shape Gymnastic

We love this simple gymnastic layout designed by the legendary George H. Morris.
Speaking to HQ Magazine, Lorette explains how to ride this layout and how it helps advanced, more confident horses:
“This advanced exercise by George H. Morris (from the book Celebrity Jumpers) is my favourite. It aids horses’ footwork and balance. I like it because all my horses are quite hot so the trot entry helps ‘keep the lid on them’. The horse has to think for himself a little, to back up to the vertical and then push to the wide oxer. The rider then has a short time to balance.
Start with a cavaletti, then three and a half paces to an oxer that is 90cm wide and 90cm high, then two strides to a 1.1m upright with one stride and then another 90cm x 90cm square oxer, with another loop to the left to a 90cm upright. As your horse progresses, these final two obstacles can be raised and also approached from different directions.
Benefits:
This exercise aids footwork and balance. It also improves the canter, introduces coursework, makes the horse listen and helps develop focus.
Tips For Use:
You can ride this weekly but don’t attempt it if your horse isn’t confident.”
